Jammu & Kashmir hit by repeated cloudbursts and flood warnings

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar issued forecasts of rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and the possibility of flash floods and mudslides across Jammu & Kashmir for the period June 12‑19. Authorities advised residents to avoid loose structures, electric poles and to suspend boating and Shikara operations during adverse weather.

Within the following week, at least six cloudbursts were recorded – five in the Jammu region and one in south Kashmir – triggering flash floods, damaging houses, paddy fields and orchards in districts such as Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and Anantnag. No casualties were reported, but residents were displaced and assessment teams were deployed to evaluate losses and provide compensation. Experts linked the heightened frequency of these events to rising temperatures, increased atmospheric moisture and loss of forest cover in the region.
