Jammu & Kashmir Sees Fatal Highway Collapse Amid Railway Expansion Plans
In 2022 a National Highway collapse at the Khooni Nallah site in Jammu & Kashmir killed ten workers. The Indian Ministry of Railways announced four new railway lines for Jammu & Kashmir in the 2025‑2026 fiscal years, including daily Vande Bharat Express services between Amritsar and Katra and between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Train sets will be expanded from eight to twenty carriages, more than doubling passenger capacity.
Heavy rains this week triggered flash floods and landslides that shut the Jammu–Srinagar highway and the Mughal Road for several days, stranded thousands of vehicles and disrupted pilgrim travel. Rescue and relief teams were deployed to restore connectivity and assist affected communities.
