Shiv Market fire guts approximately 40 shops in Jammu
A massive fire broke out late Sunday night at Shiv Market, a major commercial hub located opposite the Jammu Railway Station. The blaze, which began around 10:30 PM, lasted for approximately five hours before being brought under control in the early hours of Monday morning.
Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit in one shop triggered the fire. Strong winds and the market's narrow access lanes caused the flames to spread rapidly, making it difficult for firefighting teams to reach the affected area directly. Emergency crews eventually had to approach the blaze from the rear to contain the destruction.
Approximately 35 to 40 shops were completely gutted, including businesses specializing in dry fruits, blankets, food supplies, and clothing. One hotel also sustained significant damage. While no casualties have been reported, traders face extensive financial losses estimated to be in the crores of rupees. Local officials and BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa noted that the fire has threatened the livelihoods of hundreds of workers and their families.
