Jamra NGO responds to dismissal of charges in Senegal case

The Islamic organization Jamra has issued a statement following a court decision to dismiss charges against 28 individuals involved in a case concerning alleged homosexual activities. Mame Matar Guèye, head of Jamra, asserted that the organization has fulfilled its role as a whistleblower by submitting its own investigation findings to the Keur Massar gendarmerie research brigade.

Guèye emphasized that Jamra's mission as a civil society actor ends once evidence is handed to the authorities, stating, "Once Jamra has alerted and handed over the results of its own investigations to the investigators [...], Jamra's mission as a whistleblower is finished! It is therefore up to these security and judicial authorities to play their parts."

While the organization expressed support for Prosecutor Saliou Dicko and the local gendarmerie, it maintained that it will continue its advocacy for the protection of youth and social values. Jamra characterized its involvement as a matter of "public sanitation" intended to safeguard socio-cultural norms and the moral health of children in accordance with Senegalese law.
