Bihar harassment incidents spark outrage and political debate

A series of public harassment and assault incidents involving minors has triggered widespread outrage and political debate across Bihar, India. Following a high-profile case in Jamui where a teenage girl and boy were assaulted by a group of youths, several similar incidents have been reported in Samastipur and Darbhanga.

In Samastipur, police arrested four individuals after a video surfaced showing a group of men harassing a girl in broad daylight. In Darbhanga, two suspects, including a minor, were apprehended after a girl was allegedly molested while traveling to school. The National Commission for Women has intervened, seeking a time-bound investigation and security for the victims.

The incidents have sparked intense political friction. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary drew criticism for remarks regarding the accused attempting to film ‘reels’ during the crime. Meanwhile, state minister Shreyasi Singh faced backlash for describing the Jamui assault as “moral policing gone wrong.” Opposition parties have condemned the government's response, while social commentators have highlighted the paradox of public outrage over clothing versus the viral sharing of assault footage that further violates victims' dignity.
