Jaén authorities demand retraction from Seville Mayor over tourist tax comments
The Provincial Council of Jaén and the local hotel association, TurJaén, have demanded that the Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, retract statements regarding the implementation of a tourist tax. The controversy arose after Sanz suggested that while cities like Seville require a tourist tax, cities like Jaén might not.
TurJaén described the remarks as "gratuitous, unfortunate, and condescending," arguing that Jaén should not be used as a benchmark to diminish the debate regarding Seville's economic needs. Industry leaders highlighted a historical gap in infrastructure, noting that while Seville benefits from high-speed rail and a major airport, Jaén lacks a commercial airport and high-speed train connectivity.
Francisco Javier Lozano, the provincial deputy for tourism, defended Jaén's tourism model, emphasizing its focus on sustainability and quality over mass volume. He cited data showing Jaén as a highly-rated destination for visitor satisfaction, driven by its olive oil culture and heritage sites in Úbeda and Baeza.
