Jan Christian Vestre warns left-wing parties over sick leave

Norwegian Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre of the Labour Party has criticized the political left for failing to take sufficient responsibility in addressing high rates of sick leave. Vestre specifically targeted the Socialist Left Party (SV) and the Red Party, arguing that their opposition to certain measures could inadvertently empower the political right.

Vestre expressed concern that if the left does not address the issue, it may allow right-wing parties to gain momentum and eventually dismantle fundamental parts of the Norwegian social safety net, such as full sick pay. He emphasized that weakening sick pay would disproportionately affect low-income workers and those in demanding jobs, thereby increasing inequality.

Marie Sneve Martinussen, leader of the Red Party, rejected the criticism. She stated it was disappointing that Vestre appeared to accept the premise from the right that reducing workers' rights is the only way to lower sick leave rates.
