Jan De Nul enters CCS market with North Sea pipeline project

Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul is entering the carbon capture and storage (CCS) market by performing offshore rock installation for a North Sea CO2 pipeline project. Acting as a subcontractor to Saipem, the company will use its vessel, Simon Stevin, to install a protective layer of rock over a one-meter-diameter pipeline at seabed depths of 30 to 60 meters.

The work is part of the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) network, a joint venture involving BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies. This infrastructure is designed to transport captured CO2 from the industrial regions of Teesside and Humber on England’s east coast to a permanent storage site located thousands of meters beneath the North Sea in porous rock formations. The project aims to support the United Kingdom’s transition toward a carbon-neutral industrial sector.
