Jan Fabre faces backlash over electric fence on Vis island

Belgian artist Jan Fabre is facing local backlash on the Croatian island of Vis after installing an electric fence around a property in the Vela Čavojnica cove near Stončica. Residents and visitors reported encountering a fence approximately 1.7 meters high, equipped with live electric wires that extend down to the sea.

Locals claim the fence obstructs access to the maritime domain, which is public land under Croatian law. While Fabre owns a stone house in the area, land registry records indicate that the surrounding land is state-owned. The installation has caused significant concern among locals regarding both the legality of blocking public access to the coast and the physical danger posed by the high-voltage wires.
