Jan Frycz, prominent Polish actor, dies at 72

Jan Frycz, one of Poland’s most distinguished stage and film actors, has died at the age of 72. The National Theatre in Warsaw confirmed that the artist passed away on August 15 at his family home, surrounded by loved ones.

Frycz was a versatile performer with a career spanning nearly five decades and nearly 200 roles. He was a mainstay at major institutions, including the National Theatre in Warsaw, the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, and the Old Theatre in Krakow. His filmography includes iconic roles in productions such as ‘Wielki Szu’, ‘Pornografia’, ‘Pręgi’, and the HBO series ‘Ślepnąc od świateł’.

He remained professionally active until his final days, having recently begun rehearsals for ‘Oresteia’ directed by Luc Perceval. In May 2024, he received an Acting Award at the 66th Kalisz Theatre Encounters for his role in ‘Termopile polskie’. The Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and various artistic figures have expressed profound grief, noting that his death represents a significant loss to Polish culture.
