Jan Gorkow discusses AfD rise and political alienation

Jan Gorkow, known as ‘Monchi’, the singer of the punk band Feine Sahne Fischfilet, is discussing the political landscape in Germany and the rise of the AfD in his new book, ‘Jenseits der Brandmauer’.

Living in Jarmen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the AfD received 54 percent of the vote in a recent federal election, Gorkow reflects on the challenges of living alongside people with opposing political views. He notes that while many people express anger over issues such as pensions, migration, and economic decline, a common thread is a sense of resentment toward federal politics in Berlin.

Gorkow criticizes certain segments of the left-wing scene, suggesting that some activists create ‘fascists’ to maintain their own identity as anti-fascists. He argues that merely shouting against Nazis from a distance without substantive action is a form of capitulation. He also expresses a sense of alienation from political circles that prioritize linguistic correctness over practical engagement.
