Rheinfelden-Autobahn border crossing closed due to police operation

A major police operation has resulted in the complete closure of the Rheinfelden-Autobahn border crossing between Germany and Switzerland in both directions. The closure affects the A861 on the German side and the A3 in Switzerland, causing significant traffic congestion and long delays on alternative routes.

The operation was triggered after explosives-detection dogs from the Federal Police and Swiss Customs alerted to the presence of explosives in a vehicle entering Switzerland from Germany. Authorities also identified a criminal suspicion against the vehicle's registered owner through the Schengen States' cross-border notification and search system.

Two men were provisionally detained during the inspection. German bomb disposal experts and specialized police teams were deployed to the scene to investigate the vehicle. The border crossing, which facilitates approximately 30,000 vehicles daily, remains closed as investigations continue.
