Jan-Willem van Schip announces retirement from professional cycling

Dutch cyclist Jan-Willem van Schip has announced his retirement from professional cycling at age 32, ending a career spanning fifteen years. A specialist in both track and road cycling, van Schip was a prominent figure in the international peloton known for his versatility and unconventional competitive style.

His achievements include being a double world champion on the track, notably winning the points race world title in 2019. He represented the Netherlands in the Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. On the road, his notable victories include the Ronde van Drenthe in 2017 and a stage of the Tour of Belgium in 2019.

Van Schip was also recognized for his controversial relationship with the UCI. His penchant for innovation, such as using extremely narrow handlebars, frequently led to sanctions and disqualifications. He plans to hold his farewell during the 6 Days of Rotterdam.
