The United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has extended the operating license for Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) until September 30. This extension allows the company to continue its operations and ensures the continued functioning of the Pančevo oil refinery.

Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated that the extension is vital for national energy security, particularly as the Pančevo refinery increased its processing to approximately 13,000 tons of oil per day in August to meet rising diesel demand. The extension also provides necessary time to finalize complex negotiations regarding the ownership of NIS.

Negotiations are currently in the final stages between the majority owner, Gazprom Neft, and Hungarian company MOL, which is the potential buyer. Recent developments include a shareholder agreement where the Serbian government will acquire an additional 5 percent stake in NIS. Additionally, reports indicate that MOL and the Serbian government have reached a compromise on a 9 percent mineral rent for oil extraction.
