Jan.ai provides local open-source alternative to cloud AI
Jan.ai is an open-source application designed to provide a local alternative to cloud-based AI services like ChatGPT, addressing concerns regarding the privacy of sensitive or professional data. The software, released under the AGPL-3.0 license, allows users to run large language models (LLMs) directly on their own hardware using the llama.cpp engine and the Nitro engine via the Tauri framework. This local execution ensures that data remains on the user's machine.
In addition to local processing, Jan.ai offers the flexibility to connect to various cloud-based APIs, including OpenAI, Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Mistral, and Groq. While this provides a unified interface for multiple tools, users are cautioned that queries sent via cloud APIs are transmitted to external servers, making privacy dependent on the specific provider's terms. The application supports multiple operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, and stores conversations and metadata locally in standard JSON format.
