Janata Dal-United considers name change and opposes UCC in Bihar
The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) is considering a potential name change to ‘Janata Dal Nitish’ to honor the political contributions of party supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary indicated that a decision may be reached following upcoming National Executive and National Council meetings. While proponents suggest the change reflects Kumar’s political philosophy, opposition leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) claim the move is an attempt to prevent a party split as Kumar moves away from active politics.
Separately, the JD-U has expressed opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Bihar. Although the party supported the Bill in Parliament, national general secretary Shyam Rajak stated that Nitish Kumar has made it clear the code will not be implemented in the state. This stance has created friction within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition in Bihar, as other allies have called for consultations before proceeding with the central government's push for the UCC.
