Jane Fonda warns of authoritarianism in the United States

Actress and activist Jane Fonda has expressed concern regarding what she describes as a dangerous drift toward authoritarianism in the United States under the presidency of Donald Trump. Speaking in Venice while receiving the DVF Award from Diane von Furstenberg, Fonda noted that while African Americans have historically experienced authoritarianism, it is a new phenomenon for white Americans, who are currently learning how to react to it.

Fonda stated that many Republican voters who supported Trump do not approve of the current political climate, specifically citing leaders who “take advantage of cruelty and create chaos.” Despite her concerns, the 88-year-old activist expressed hope, stating she is working to prevent the consolidation of authoritarian power and remains committed to fighting for civil rights.
