Jane Schoenbrun releases surrealist slasher film Camp Miasma

Jane Schoenbrun’s latest feature film, ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’, offers a surrealist reimagining of the 1980s slasher genre. The story follows filmmaker Kris (played by Hannah Einbinder), who is hired to reboot a fictional long-running franchise. During her research, she connects with Billy (played by Gillian Anderson), the original ‘final girl’ of the series, leading to an intense emotional and sexual connection that blurs the lines between fiction and reality.

The film serves as a meta-commentary on horror tropes, exploring themes of identity, embodiment, transformation, and gender-based issues. While the film incorporates comedic elements, it also addresses heavy subject matter including sexualized trauma and transphobia. Portions of the production were filmed at the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA).
