Jane Schoenbrun’s Camp Miasma slasher arrives on Mubi
Jane Schoenbrun’s new film, ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’, is now available on the streaming platform Mubi. The film, which stars Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, serves as a satirical homage to the slasher genre of the 1970s and 1980s while incorporating queer romance and surrealist elements.
The plot follows a non-binary director, played by Einbinder, who is tasked with reviving a fictional cult slasher franchise called ‘Camp Miasma’. As she attempts to track down the original ‘final girl’, played by Anderson, the narrative blurs the lines between fiction and reality, offering a meta-commentary on the film industry’s tendency to exploit old franchises.
Following its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received the Queer Palm, critical reception has been divided. Some reviewers praise it as a clever and hilarious exploration of cinematic paradoxes, while others find the meta-narrative approach polarizing.
