Jane Street reports $15 billion July loss and executes massive debt swap

Jane Street, the New York-based quantitative trading firm, reported a loss of approximately $15 billion in July 2026, marking its first monthly loss in nearly a decade. The loss is attributed to high volatility in AI-related stocks and concentrated exposure to Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund managed by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner.

In response to the loss, the firm is executing a massive debt restructuring led by JPMorgan. The transaction, valued between $14.6 billion and $15 billion, involves converting roughly $11 billion of existing public debt into a private structure. This move involves major institutional lenders, including Pimco, Capital Group, and Fidelity.

By pivoting to private debt, Jane Street aims to reduce financial visibility. Unlike public debt, which requires regular financial disclosures to bondholders, the private structure limits the number of counterparties receiving detailed financial results. Despite the July setback, the firm's year-to-date net trading revenue had surpassed $40 billion by mid-August 2026.
