Janez Janša faces backlash over disputed Gaza photograph

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša faced intense criticism in the National Assembly after presenting a photograph he claimed depicted victims of Christian massacres in Sudan. The image, intended to argue that global attention is disproportionately focused on Gaza compared to conflicts in Sudan and Nigeria, was revealed by media outlets and parliamentary opposition to have actually been taken in Gaza.

During a debate with opposition leader Robert Golob regarding the Israeli military's actions and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Janša asserted that, according to international law, no genocide is occurring in Gaza. He used the disputed image to illustrate the scale of suffering in Sudan. However, investigations showed the photo was originally posted on Instagram by David McIntosh, a former British marine who worked at a humanitarian aid distribution point in Gaza.

Opposition leaders, including Golob and representatives from the Left party, condemned the incident as a political failure and a display of cynicism. They called for an apology, arguing that the Prime Minister used misleading visual evidence to deflect from discussions on Palestinian rights and international law.
