Janez Janša Forms New Slovenian Government, Seeks Opposition Partnership

Prime Minister Janez Janša has invited opposition parties and representatives of national minorities to join a partnership aimed at drafting legislation, constitutional and systemic reforms, and accelerating economic development in Slovenia. The draft partnership outlines a collaborative process in which the opposition can contribute expertise, propose bills, and receive coordinated feedback from ministries, without being obliged to support government votes. A joint partnership council would coordinate proposals and legislative timelines.

European media have framed Janša’s return to power as a shift toward a more right‑wing, populist agenda, likening him to allies such as Viktor Orbán and former US President Donald Trump. Commentators describe the new coalition as deepening partisan divides, pursuing tax cuts and other policies they say favor wealthy interests, and raising concerns within EU institutions about Slovenia’s direction.

The domestic response includes criticism from liberal parties and civil society, while some economists see potential for fiscal and infrastructure reforms. Janša has reaffirmed support for EU integration, including Ukraine’s accession and Western Balkan ties.
