Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša has called on the European Union to fulfill its commitments regarding the enlargement of the union to the Western Balkans. Speaking at the 21st Bled Strategic Forum, Janša emphasized that expansion is not a favor to candidate countries but a strategic necessity for the future of the European continent.

Janša warned that if the EU fails to expand, other global actors will fill the vacuum, which would be detrimental to European interests. He noted that the goal of integrating the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership is more critical now than ever.

Beyond enlargement, Janša identified four strategic challenges for Europe: security, resilience, demography, and credibility. Regarding security, he referenced the war in Ukraine as a reminder that peace must be actively protected and that borders cannot be changed by force. He also stressed the importance of reducing strategic dependencies in sectors such as energy, critical minerals, semiconductors, and supply chains.
