Janez Janša's New Slovenian Cabinet Confirmed, Tax Plan Hints at VAT Rise

Slovenia's parliament approved the 16th government, the fourth cabinet led by Prime Minister Janez Janša, on 4 June with a 49‑30 vote. The coalition brings together SDS, the Democratic Party, NSi, SLS and Fokus, supported by Resni ca and two minority MPs. Janša thanked outgoing premier Robert Golob, pledged an assessment of the government's state, and invited opposition parties to a partnership for development.

Finance Minister Andrej Šircelj, a member of Janša’s party, told reporters that raising the value‑added tax (VAT) is a possible measure under the coalition agreement. He said a higher VAT could be balanced by cuts to income tax or broader allowances, and projected that a one‑point VAT increase could generate €250‑300 million in revenue, affecting wages and consumer prices.
