Jang Dong-hyuk urges police reform and warns against dismantling prosecutors

People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk visited police headquarters in Seoul and Gwangju to protest alleged collusion in the murder case of a high‑school girl and to demand that the prosecutor’s supplementary investigation authority be retained. He posted on Facebook, "검찰의 보완수사권은 반드시 남겨두어야 한다" and added that "시급한 것은 검찰 해체가 아니라 경찰개혁". Jang warned that dismantling the prosecutor’s office would create a "monster police" and harm public safety.

During the Seoul visit, acting police commissioner Yoon Jae‑seong refused a public meeting, citing security regulations, prompting Jang and other PPP lawmakers to leave after about 55 minutes. The lawmakers criticized the police for allegedly covering up evidence and called for the resignation of senior police officials. The protests reflect broader political tension over the balance of investigative power between prosecutors and police in South Korea.
