Kwon Young‑jin’s neck‑grab ignites disciplinary saga in South Korea’s ruling party
Lawmaker Kwon Young‑jin of the People Power Party physically grabbed the neck of party leader Jung Jeom‑sik during a dispute over committee assignments. The incident, which occurred on 23 July, led Kwon to apologise in person on 27 July, meeting Jung in the party’s leader office and shaking hands.
Party leaders, including the party’s top committee, called for strong punishment. They urged Kwon to submit a voluntary resignation and discussed the possibility of expulsion. The party’s ethics committee opened disciplinary proceedings against Kwon, as well as against other members Jin Jong‑o and Jo Gyeong‑tae.
A civic organization filed a police report accusing Kwon of assault, abuse of authority and forcible violence. In response, Kwon relinquished his role as administrative safety committee secretary and withdrew from a planned mayoral candidacy. The episode deepened existing factional tensions within the People Power Party, with some factions demanding accountability and others defending Kwon’s actions.
