Italian Berrettini, Sinner and Cobolli advance at Wimbledon 2026

Matteo Berrettini defeated three‑time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in a four‑set marathon (6‑7 (7), 7‑6 (16), 7‑6 (7), 7‑6 (5)) to move into the second round of Wimbledon 2026, where he will meet French youngster Arthur Fils.

Flavio Cobolli overcame Mariano Navone after the match was suspended for darkness and resumed the next day. Cobolli won 1‑6, 7‑6 (5), 6‑3, 7‑6 (8) to reach the second round, where he will face Australian James Duckworth.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7‑6 (4), 7‑6 (2), 6‑4, recording his 95th Grand Slam match win – an Italian record – and advancing to the third round against American Jenson Brooksby. After the win Sinner said his team had identified the cause of the cramps that troubled him at the French Open and that they were working to prevent a repeat. Former world No. 1 John McEnroe later remarked that Sinner’s recent cramp issues were largely mental and that the Italian was studying ways to minimise them.
