Jannik Sinner Defended Wimbledon Title While Playing Below Peak, Coach Says

Italian world No. 1 Jannik Sinner retained his Wimbledon crown, defeating Alexander Zverev in four sets to win his fifth Grand Slam and become the 10th man in the Open Era to repeat as champion at the All England Club.

Coach Patrick Mouratoglou said Sinner was operating at only about 65‑70 % of his usual level during the tournament, noting reduced aggression, more forehand errors, a tendency to retreat on the baseline and a weaker return, especially in the final. Mouratoglou added that Sinner’s ability to win despite not being at his best demonstrated greater mental resilience.

The victory followed Sinner’s early exit in the second round of Roland Garros, where he lost to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, and his decision to skip traditional grass‑court warm‑up events, focusing instead on training before Wimbledon.
