Jannik Sinner prepares to defend Wimbledon title as tournament opens

The 2026 Wimbledon Championships run from 29 June to 12 July at the All England Club in London. Defending men’s champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner begins his title defence in the first round against Serbian Miomir Kecmanović on Centre Court. Sinner said, “If you don’t play any tournament, you don’t have these doubts, you just go and play,” and expressed confidence that skipping grass‑court warm‑up events has left him mentally ready.

Women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka opens against Serbian Teodora Kostović, looking for her first Grand Slam title of the year. Novak Djokovic, also in the draw, is chasing a 25th major to become the all‑time leader. Former champion Serena Williams, aged 44, returns on a wildcard in the singles draw (and with sister Venus in doubles), facing Australian Maya Joint.

Prize money has risen 20 % to £64.2 million, with singles champions set to earn £3.6 million. Betting markets list Sinner as the favourite at –180 odds, with Djokovic and Sabalenka also drawing attention. The tournament features other leading players such as Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
