Jannik Sinner's Italian Open win sparks TV debate on his Italian identity

Jannik Sinner clinched the Italian Open title in Rome, becoming the first Italian champion in 50 years after Adriano Panatta’s 1976 victory. Sky Sport marked the achievement with a two‑part special, “Sinner, Re di Roma: 50 anni dopo,” featuring backstage footage, interviews with former stars and analysis of his historic Career Golden Masters.

The win also reignited discussion of Sinner’s heritage. During a live broadcast of La volta buona on Rai 1, a commentator suggested Sinner was not fully Italian because he grew up in the German‑speaking region of Alto Adige. Host Caterina Balivo promptly corrected the remark, stating “Jannik Sinner is Italian, Alto Adige is in Italy,” aiming to halt the controversy surrounding his nationality and language background.
