Janosch, creator of the Tigerente, dies at 95 FAST-MOVING

Renowned German author and illustrator Janosch, born Horst Eckert, has died at the age of 95 on the island of Tenerife. His longtime publisher, Bernhard Feil, confirmed the news on behalf of the artist’s wife.

Janosch achieved international fame through his beloved children’s books, most notably “Oh, wie schön ist Panama,” which debuted in 1978. His works, featuring iconic characters such as the Little Tiger, the Little Bear, and the Tigerente, have been translated into approximately 40 languages with millions of copies sold. His characters became a significant brand, appearing on various licensed products and inspiring television programs.

Born in 1931 in Zabrze, Upper Silesia, Janosch’s early life was marked by poverty and hardship, experiences that often informed his writing. His stories frequently served as a heartwarming counterpoint to these difficult beginnings, emphasizing friendship, resilience, and finding happiness in simple things. Beyond children’s literature, he was also a painter, graphic artist, and author of works for adults.
