Janus Films releases 4K restoration of René Laloux’s Gandahar

Janus Films has released a new 4K restoration of the uncut French version of Gandahar, the 1987 animated sci-fi film by the late René Laloux. The restoration premiered in New York City on August 28 before a planned national expansion.

Directed by Laloux, who also created the cult classic Fantastic Planet, Gandahar depicts a utopian society facing an invasion by robots. The film explores themes of genetic experimentation and the long-term consequences of creating ultimate weapons. This release provides the complete original version, contrasting with the 1988 North American edited version, Light Years, which featured dialogue adapted by Isaac Asimov.
