Japan academic institutions to host symposia on regional population decline

Academic and regional institutions in Japan are organizing symposia to address the challenges of a shrinking society caused by population decline and an aging demographic.

In September 2026, Ehime University and the Science Council of Japan will host a symposium focused on the future value of regional cities. The event aims to discuss new regional models for sustainability and the role of agriculture in creating a multi-polar, decentralized society.

Additionally, Taisho University's Institute for Regional Design will hold a symposium titled ‘Smart Shrinkage: Wise Town Planning’ in September 2026. This event will explore methods to maintain social functions and improve resident well-being despite declining populations. The program includes case studies from Kochi Prefecture, Minami-Izu Town, and Nichinan Town, alongside reports on the changing Japanese economy.
