Japan accelerates automation in autonomous driving and logistics
Japan is seeing significant advancements in automation technologies, driven by government strategy and industrial demand. The Japanese government has identified autonomous driving as a key pillar of its growth strategy, with projected investments reaching 8.2 trillion yen by fiscal year 2040.
In the autonomous driving sector, Tier IV is developing a software-defined System-on-Chip (SoC) to achieve Level 4 autonomy. This initiative aims to create an open-source ecosystem that ensures transparency and mathematical verifiability of AI decision-making, addressing concerns regarding the “black box” nature of end-to-end AI models. Additionally, Tier IV and Astemo are collaborating to build an AI development platform for autonomous driving, targeting practical application by 2030.
Parallel to automotive advancements, Japan’s material handling equipment market is projected to grow from 15.1 billion USD in 2025 to 27.7 billion USD by 2035. This growth is fueled by labor shortages and the expansion of e-commerce and semiconductor manufacturing. Companies are increasingly investing in AI-integrated robotics, autonomous forklifts, and smart warehousing solutions to improve safety and efficiency. For instance, Toyota Material Handling Japan and Fujitsu are co-developing AI services to analyze forklift operation via camera imagery to enhance workplace safety.
