Japan advances quantum computing with new photonic hardware and optical module development

Japan is advancing its domestic quantum computing capabilities through two major technological developments. OptQC and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) have commenced operations of ‘MoQuren’, the first domestic photonic quantum computer, at AIST’s G-QuAT research center. Unlike superconducting models, this photonic system operates at room temperature and standard pressure, offering a more energy-efficient and scalable alternative for AI-driven data centers.

In a separate initiative, SCREEN Holdings and Yaqumo have entered a joint research agreement to develop high-performance optical modules for cold-atom quantum computers. This collaboration aims to localize the production of critical optical components, such as spatial light modulators and multi-wavelength lenses. By standardizing these modules, the companies intend to reduce reliance on foreign components and establish a robust Japanese industrial foundation for the global quantum computing supply chain.
