Japan Agriculture Minister Arata Takebe apologizes over donation scandal
Newly appointed Agriculture Minister Arata Takebe has apologized following reports that a Liberal Democratic Party branch he leads received illegal political donations. According to reports from Bunshun Online, the Hokkaido-based branch received funds from a local contractor engaged in national public works projects during the first day of official campaigning for the 2014 House of Representatives election. This timing potentially violates the Public Offices Election Law.
Takebe stated that while he acknowledged the donation, he was unaware the company had secured national public works contracts at the time. He has instructed officials to investigate the facts and intends to either return the funds or correct political fund disclosure reports. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reportedly instructed Takebe to confirm the details and respond appropriately.
Opposition parties have criticized the incident, with members of the Democratic Reform Association questioning the oversight within the Prime Minister's official residence and stating that returning the money may not resolve the underlying issue. Takebe succeeded Kazuo Yana, who resigned in mid-October.
