Japan Air Commuter cancels flight after snake found on plane

Japan Air Commuter Fukuoka Airport Japan Airlines snake on plane flight cancellation

A flight operated by Japan Air Commuter, a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, was cancelled at Fukuoka Airport after a snake was discovered inside the aircraft. The incident occurred on Monday as the crew was preparing for a scheduled departure to Kagoshima prefecture.

A pilot initially spotted a small moving object near the cockpit, leading to a search that initially proved unsuccessful. Approximately 24 hours later, a mechanic discovered the 40cm-long reptile hidden under the cabin carpet. Wildlife experts identified the creature as a young, non-venomous Japanese snake (Elaphe climacophora).

Japan Air Commuter stated that this is the first time such an incident has occurred in their history. While the snake is believed to have entered the aircraft from the wild, officials are still investigating exactly how it accessed the cabin. Maintenance crews inspected the aircraft's electrical systems and wiring to ensure no damage was caused before returning the plane to service.
