Japan Airlines introduces aircraft washing robot at Narita Airport

Japan Airlines (JAL) is introducing the Aerowash AW3, a program-controlled aircraft washing robot, at Narita Airport. This marks the first time a Japanese airline has deployed a collaborative washing robot featuring programmed automatic approach functions and multi-axis control.

Developed by Sweden-based Aerowash AB, the battery-powered robot uses an omnidirectional four-wheel-steering system to maneuver around aircraft. The system is designed for human-machine collaboration: the robotic arm automatically approaches specific programmed sections, such as wings and tails, while operators use handheld controls for precise final adjustments. This approach aims to balance labor reduction with high safety standards.

JAL expects the technology to reduce aircraft washing labor by up to 40% and water usage by up to 50% per aircraft. The initiative is part of a broader digital transformation (DX) strategy to improve worker well-being by reducing physical strain and exposure to chemicals. Following operational training, JAL plans to begin full-scale use of the system in 2026, with potential expansion to other airports.
