Japan allocates $12 million for Mozambique bridge and training

Japan has announced a funding package of approximately $12.23 million to support infrastructure and human resource development in Mozambique. The agreement, formalized in Maputo through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), includes $10.61 million specifically allocated for the reconstruction of the Natete Bridge in the Ribáuè district of Nampula province.

The reconstruction aims to strengthen the Nacala Corridor, a strategic route for regional trade and economic integration. The new infrastructure is designed to be more resilient to the frequent flooding and extreme weather events that have impacted the area, featuring improved access roads and bank protection works. The bridge had previously received Japanese funding during its initial construction in 2014 but was damaged by continuous water pressure and weather conditions.

Additionally, the funding includes approximately $1.62 million for the Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) project. This initiative will provide scholarships for Mozambican public officials to pursue training at Japanese universities, with up to 10 officials eligible per year.
