Japan and Kuwait reaffirm energy security and maritime cooperation

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Nasser Al-Sabah met in Tokyo to reaffirm their strong bilateral relationship and commitment to political, economic, and regional cooperation.

A central focus of the meeting was energy security. Motegi expressed gratitude for Kuwait’s steady crude oil exports to Japan despite instability in the Hormuz Strait. Both ministers agreed on the importance of ensuring free and safe navigation through the strait without additional costs, noting that the future of the waterway should be discussed among all relevant coastal and user states.

Japan introduced its ‘Power Asia’ vision, aimed at stabilizing oil supplies across Asia, and expressed interest in collaborating with Kuwait to enhance economic and energy resilience in the Gulf region. The two sides also pledged to accelerate cooperation in new sectors, including artificial intelligence and education, and agreed to restart the Japan-Kuwait Joint Committee.
