Japan and Micronesia strengthen ties through maritime and development cooperation

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) President Wesley W. Simina met in Tokyo to discuss regional stability and economic development. The discussions focused on enhancing maritime security and transport connectivity within the Pacific region.

As part of this cooperation, Japan announced a study via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) regarding the provision of a new cargo-passenger vessel to improve mobility and trade among Micronesian islands. This follows the critical role Japan-funded vessels played in relief efforts after Typhoon Sinlaku.

Additional development priorities include the Pohnpei State Port Expansion Project, which is expected to be completed in 2028. The leaders also discussed preparations for the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 11), scheduled to take place in Yokohama, Japan, in summer 2027.
