Cuba receives food aid from Japan and Russia

Cuba has received significant food aid from Japan and Russia to support vulnerable populations and those affected by Hurricane Melissa. The donations are being distributed through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

Japan donated 425 tons of rice as part of a one-million-dollar contribution to the WFP. Russia provided 750 tons of vegetable oil, sourced from its Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters. These supplies are intended for high-priority groups, including children under five, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.

The aid arrives as Cuba faces a severe humanitarian and socio-economic crisis. Recovery from Hurricane Melissa, which struck five eastern provinces in October 2025, has been hampered by fuel shortages, electricity blackouts, and damaged infrastructure. Reports indicate that tens of thousands of families remain in compromised housing, and millions face disruptions to clean water supplies. The ongoing economic difficulties are compounded by systemic shortages and external pressures.
