Japan and South Korea show diverging results in international sports

Japan and South Korea are experiencing contrasting outcomes in major international sporting competitions. In football, Japan has achieved a record high of four nominees for the Ballon d'Or awards, including Yui Hasegawa, Magoku Matsukubo, Momoko Tanigawa, and Anya Yamashita for the women's categories. In contrast, South Korea had no players selected for the nominations.

Historical data shows that since 1995, Japanese players have accounted for approximately 48% of all Ballon d'Or nominees from AFC member nations. This represents double the number of nominees produced by South Korea.

In multi-sport competition, the gap has also widened at the Asian Games. While South Korea secured third place overall, its gold medal count fell to 39, the lowest in 44 years. Meanwhile, host nation Japan achieved a record-breaking 83 gold medals, significantly increasing the margin between the two nations compared to previous games.
