Japan and Taiwan announce significant increases in defense spending

Japan's Ministry of Defense is planning to request approximately 8.9 trillion yen for its fiscal year 2027 budget, marking a post-war record high. This increase has sparked domestic concerns regarding fiscal sustainability. Experts warn that rising interest rates could cause national debt servicing costs to climb significantly, potentially squeezing budgets for social security, education, and healthcare. Additionally, critics note that if the budget is primarily used for importing foreign weaponry, the economic stimulus to Japan's domestic industry may be limited.

In Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te announced that the national defense budget for the upcoming year will exceed 1 trillion TWD for the first time, reaching 1.1225 trillion TWD. This maintains defense spending at over 3% of GDP. The administration aims to focus on defense autonomy, the development of the military-industrial complex, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and unmanned vehicles. The government also intends to improve military personnel benefits and training to enhance combat readiness and resilience in response to security challenges in the Taiwan Strait.
