Japan and Taiwan raise alarms over increasing Chinese pressure

Tensions in the Indo-Pacific are escalating as Japan and Taiwan address increasing pressure from China. Japan has formally requested that China show 'appropriate respect' toward Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The request follows an incident where a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson referred to the Prime Minister by name only, omitting her official title. This diplomatic friction follows recent statements from Takaichi suggesting Tokyo might intervene if China attacks Taiwan.

In the United States, former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen warned of intensifying Chinese military and non-military pressure. Speaking at the Stanford DEFCON National Security Technology Conference, Tsai highlighted that Taiwan faces daily cyberattacks, cognitive warfare, economic coercion, and increased maritime activity from Chinese military and coast guard vessels. She described these as 'gray zone' operations designed to avoid open conflict while undermining stability. Tsai emphasized Taiwan's critical role in global supply chains and its indispensable position for Indo-Pacific security.
