Japan and UNICEF reaffirm partnership to aid Pakistani children

The governments of Japan and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) renewed their decades‑long partnership aimed at improving the health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, and protection of children in Pakistan. Japan, one of UNICEF’s longest‑standing and largest donors, contributed US$6.48 million to UNICEF’s emergency response after the catastrophic 2022 floods, helping deliver clean water, sanitation facilities, health care and nutrition support to families in the hardest‑hit provinces of Sindh and Balochistan.

Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi emphasized that the collaboration is rooted in a shared belief that every child deserves a safe, healthy, and dignified life, and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to Pakistan’s polio eradication campaigns. Acting UNICEF Representative Sharmeela Rasool highlighted how the aid not only addressed immediate humanitarian needs but also strengthened long‑term systems to better prepare communities for future climate‑related emergencies.
