Japan and United States commit $1 billion to AI-driven scientific partnership

Japan and the United States have agreed to a five‑year, $1 billion strategic partnership to advance artificial‑intelligence‑driven scientific research. The plan, called the “Genesis Mission,” will receive $500 million from the Japanese government and $500 million from the United States, with joint funding aimed at large‑scale international R&D.

The collaboration will integrate AI with quantum information technology, nuclear fusion, biotechnology, critical materials and particle physics, sharing computing resources across national laboratories, industry and academia. Japanese Cabinet Office chief Kihara Minoru highlighted the partnership as essential for maintaining future economic security and competitiveness, while U.S. officials framed it as a move to strengthen national security and scientific discovery against China’s rising capabilities.
