US-Japan Keen Sword 27 military exercise begins
The biennial Keen Sword 27 joint military exercise has commenced, involving approximately 45,000 Japan Self-Defense Force personnel and 11,000 U.S. service members. The drills, running from October 19 to 29, represent the largest iteration of the exercise to date and include participation from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
Training focuses on air and missile defense, maritime operations, logistics, and casualty evacuation across various locations, including Okinawa, the Sakishima Islands, and the East China Sea. The exercises aim to strengthen interoperability and command and control along the First Island Chain, with capabilities such as anti-ship operations and mobile deployments being tested.
While U.S. military leadership described the drills as a way to deter aggression and validate combat readiness, local groups in Japan have expressed concerns. Protesters in Saitama monitored activities at the Iruma Air Base, citing worries over military escalation and the impact of training on local residents.
