Japan and US launch largest Keen Sword military exercise
The Japan-US joint integrated exercise, Keen Sword 27, commenced on October 19 with a record-breaking participation of approximately 57,000 personnel. The force includes about 45,000 Self-Defense Forces members and 12,000 US military personnel. The exercise involves nine nations, including Australia.
In an unusual response to a recent robbery and murder incident involving a US serviceman, restrictions have been placed on US military personnel participating in the exercise. According to Defense Vice Minister Kiyoshi Odawara, participating US troops are currently prohibited from drinking alcohol and have faced limitations on going out at exercise locations.
