Japan and U.S. reaffirm 15% tariff limit agreement

Japanese Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa met with U.S. Trade Representative Greer in Washington to reaffirm compliance with previous trade agreements. The discussions focused on ensuring that even if the United States introduces new trade measures, additional tariffs on Japan will not exceed the 15% limit established in a July 2025 agreement.

This confirmation comes as the U.S. conducts investigations under Section 301 regarding overcapacity in various countries, which could potentially lead to new tariffs. In a separate meeting with Commerce Secretary Lutnick, Akazawa discussed Japan’s planned $550 billion investment in the United States, noting that artificial intelligence and semiconductors are primary targets for future investment. The talks also addressed responses to China’s export restrictions on critical minerals.
